Vermont YouTube of the Day

Sorry for all the video posts. Been too busy to do much else.

Here's one from the Peace and Justice Center showing Vermonters at the big national anti-war march last weekend.

Vermont YouTube of the Day

Here's a creative plea from University of Vermont ResLife staffer Kevin Hytten. He wants UVM students to fill out a student statisfaction survey that he'll be emailing to them in February.

I found this video on YouTube the other day, then contacted Kevin (who had used his name as his YouTube screenname, making him easy to find in the UVM directory) to confirm that it was, in fact, a real UVM video. Here's what he had to say about it:

"We have about 4,600 students on campus and I have coordinated many assessment projects in the past few years, yet we always struggle to get students to complete a survey no matter what the incentive is. So I thought I would try to find a way to connect with them using current technology and my graduate assistant suggested YouTube. I plan to include the link as part of the survey email. My hope is to at least prevent them from hitting delete right away. If one student at least mentions to another 'hey did you see that video?' perhaps my survey email will stay in their inbox a few days longer."

Cool. Especially since Kevin himself stars in the video. I think it's great that people with titles like "Assistant Director for Research, Marketing, & Publications" are willing to act goofy on YouTube.

Freyne's in the hospital

Peter_1_2 In case you hadn't heard, Seven Days political columnist Peter Freyne is in the hospital. He was recently diagnosed with cancer. You can read Peter's own account of this turn of events on his blog. Talk about transperancy...

Hall Monitor hangs up his hat

Darren Allen is  no longer roaming the halls of the legislature on behalf of the Vermont Press Bureau. Here's the latest post on the Hall Monitor blog:

A note from the editors...

January 23, 2007
You may have noticed Darren Allen's absence from the Halls over the last couple of days, and we want to explain.

Allen, who started this blog two legislative sessions ago as this paper's first venture into the blogosphere, has decided to leave his post as chief of the Vermont Press Bureau to become the communications director for the Agency of Natural Resources.

He will start his new job -- where he will be responsible for letting the public (and us) in on what the more than 600 people in ANR are doing -- on Feb. 5.

While we don't know the future of the Hall Monitor -- or who will roam the halls and let you all in on the gossip, intrigue and insider tidbits -- we do know that you can continue to expect the best political reporting in the state from the Vermont Press Bureau's Louis Porter.

We wish Darren well as he jumps over to the other side.

Stay tuned.

Odum at Green Mountain Daily has started a discussion about Allen's departure. I started to comment on it this morning, but I need more time to organize my thoughts. I'm definitely sad to see Darren go.

Vermont YouTube of the Day

This is the "trailer" for Chris Bohjalian's new book, The Double Bind. I heard it referenced on VPR yesterday. It kinda makes me want to read the book, but the keywords bombarding me at the end are definitely over the top. My advice to the marketers would be to tone it down a bit.

Tuesday Deadline Linkdump

Cup_1 Time again for my weekly Vermont blog roundup:

Radio Bean in Burlington? Bad Girls Cafe in Johnson? The Village Cup in Jericho? Vote for your favorite Vermont coffee joint on Vermont Hum. I guess this is a good time to point out that you can also leave comments about these places on our Seven Nights Dining and Nightlife Guide.

Beauty is truth, truth beauty. Outrageouschaos does not appear to be a still unravish'd bride of quietness, but she agrees with Keats. In case you can't tell, I love this blog.

• Ouch! Charity Tensel totally disses Loyal Ploof, who attempted to run for Burlington City Council as a Republican. Today Ploof has announced he's not running after all.

• I didn't make the connection until yesterday that the Steve Mermelstein who blogs at #!/usr/bin/geek is the same Steve Mermelstein who owns the old Milton Bowling Center, which is about to be leased to a national retailer

• They're buried at the end of this post, but Philip Baruth links to some fascinating online projects related to governmental transperancy.

•  More discussion of the governor's e-state concept from tech savvy Tom Evslin of Stowe.

Who's the Boss now? Mistress Maeve blogs about nekkid pictures of Danny Pintauro (aka Jonathon Bower from WTB?)

Vermont YouTube of the Day

This appears to be a trailer for a documentary about a woman race car driver in rural Vermont.

Their title: "Car 69"
My title: "She's not a woman, she's a driver."
