Baby Yak
I was surfing around on YouTube and found this video from the Vermont Yak Company. Apparently, one of their "royals" gave birth this morning. Here's a video of the little baby yak, courtesy of Rob Williams.
Seven Days Food Editor Suzanne Podhaizer profiled the company in April.
Vermont’s iconic cow has got competition — if Rob, a Champlain College professor and the editor of Vermont Commons, has anything to say about it. “I sort of see yaks as the quintessential Vermont bovine,” he suggests. “They’re really adaptable, very surefooted, fierce and protective, and they love the cold. It’s a perfect fit.”
Welcome to the world, baby yak.
Oh my gosh! Ittle wobbly bebeh. I've never seen Holstein patterned yaks before! I picture them as being shades of dark grey. Are they inter bred? Or do they look like that in Nepal? Looking at their website and Suzanne's article it looks like they are purebred. Neat! Will we see yak hats and mittens available this winter?
So cute. Ohmigosh. So cute.

Cute. Too bad it's going to get slaughtered one day.
