Richmond Police Chief to Stay on the Job

After giving it some thought, Richmond police chief William “Joe” Miller told the town selectboard that he will remain in his post after all.

Miller submitted a letter of resignation in August, which the board rejected.

“After careful consideration I have decided to remain as the chief of the Richmond Police department and continue my service to the community," said Miller, in a statement.

MIller said "overwhelming and oustanding" community support was a major factor in his decision to stay. He also thanked the board for the "countless hours they have devoted to the issues that led to my resignation."

"I feel confident that the board and I have made significant progress and now the focus needs to be on moving the town forward in a professional and productive manner," Miller added.  "It is my privilege and honor to serve and protect the citizens of this great community."

For more details on Miller's original resignation and some of the acrimony between at least one selectboard member and the chief, check out Ken Picard's recent profile of selectboard member Mary Houle. ("Is Mary Houle Rescuing Richmond or Ripping It Apart?" Oct. 28, 2009).
