Johnson State Students to Quiz (Major Party) Statewide Candidates

2009TownMeetingSurvey It's just one of those political rituals in Vermont: Forums before Johnson State College students hosted by political professor and State Sen. Bill Doyle (R-Washington).

That's why major-party candidates trek north to Johnson — far from the state's major population centers — to climb the stairs to the second floor of JSC's library and answer questions from 50 or more students for two hours. Unlike some of the candidate forums, Doyle only invites the major-party nominees.

As I noted in this week's "Fair Game," the two major-party candidates for state auditor — Democrat Doug Hoffer and incumbent Republican Tom Salmon — will take questions this coming Monday night from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Each forum is held at that time in the library's Ellsworth Room.

Here's the lineup for the rest of the year's campaign and election forums:

Sept. 20: U.S. Senate: Incumbent Sen. Patrick Leahy (D) and Len Britton (R)

Sept. 27: State Treasurer: Incumbent Jeb Spaulding (D) and Don Schramm (P)

Oct. 11: Governor: Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie (R) and Peter Shumlin (D)

Oct. 18: Secretary of State: Jim Condos (D) and Jason Gibbs (R)

Oct. 25: Lt. Governor: Rep. Steve Howard (D), Marjorie Power (P) and Sen. Phil Scott (R)

Nov. 1: U.S. House: Incumbent Rep. Peter Welch (D) and Paul Beaudry (R)

Nov. 8: Analysis of the 2010 campaign

The three major-party candidates for attorney general — Charlotte Dennett (P), incumbent Bill Sorrell (D) and Aaron Toscano (R), held a forum on August 30.
