It's "Help a Flooded Farm" Day

Imgres If any of you out there are looking to get your squash-harvesting-in-the-rain merit badge, or at least win some good karma points with the gods of agriculture and good deeds, then head on down to the Arethusa Farm at the Intervale. Apparently, they're drowning down there. Or at least their squash are.

Since the Intervale lies in a floodplain, its soil is incredibly fertile and its farms are generally prodigious. But because it lies in a floodplain along the Winooski River, the land is also highly susceptible to flooding. Which is what is happening down there now.

So, if you've got hands that can harvest and feet upon which you can stand, you are needed. Here's a note from the folks at City Market, soliciting help for the farmers:

Arethusa Farm in Burlington’s Intervale needs your help TODAY!
With all the rain that we received last night and into today, Arethusa’s fields are in danger of flooding. They’re looking for volunteers to come help harvest squash and other crops today. If you have time please stop over and volunteer.
Directions:  Arethusa Farm is located exactly one mile into the Intervale.  Parking is VERY limited so please consider biking or parking at the top of Intervale Road (across from Gardener’s Supply).  If you park at the top of Intervale Road, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the farm.  Arethusa is on the right, across from Adam’s Berry Farm.  It has a small oval sign.

If you’re thinking of helping later in the afternoon today, please call Thomas on his cell phone, 802-578-6429.

Grab your raincoat and mud boots and make your way to Arethusa!

This has been a public service announcement from your awesome friends at Seven Days.

Once again, Nike Air Max 95 is the voice of reason.
