Vermont College Alum Suspended in Arctic Pod to Protest Oil Drilling Off Greenland (VIDEO)
***Update - Thursday, June 2***
After four days inside the arctic survival pod, McHardy and her fellow Greenpeace protesters today were forcibly removed from the oil rig and arrested by the Danish Navy, according to Greenpeace. Photo and video below.
Prepare to be boarded!
A 25-year-old graduate of Vermont's Sterling College is going to great lengths to protest deep-water drilling in the Arctic. Hannah McHardy is currently suspended in an "arctic survival pod" under an oil rig off the coast of Greenland with two other Greenpeace activists.
McHardy and her companions are hanging underneath Scottish firm Cairn Energy's massive Leiv Eiriksson oil rig, 100 miles west of the Greenland coast. They have enough food and water to last 10 days and are "demanding an end to reckless deep-water oil drilling."
And they're tweeting, blogging and v-logging the high-stakes hijacking in real time. In this clip, McHardy explains why she's doing it. (Spoiler alert: It's to prevent another environmental catastrophe like the Deep Water Horizon oil spill).
Seven Days readers will recall McHardy as the college grad who is researching whether fungi spores can help clean up the toxic mess left behind from an old asbestos mine in Eden. Now she's upped the ante with a daring exploit that's garnering international media attention.
The Greenpeace activists deployed the semi-submersible pod from one of two Greenpeace ships at the drilling site and attached it to the 53,000-ton oil rig on Monday.
Since then, McHardy and her cohorts have been posting regular updates from inside the pod.
McHardy blogged at 10 a.m. this morning:
The fog and snow has closed in around us and we can barely make out even the silhouettes of the Danish Navy ship and the Esperanza. We can’t see the other Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise but we know it’s not far away. I can’t tell you how good it is knowing we have so many amazing people nearby supporting us as we make a stand against oil drilling in the Arctic.
She continued:
The rig seems to be preparing to drill but as long as our pod remains up and attached to the flare booms they will not be able to begin. We are prepared with food, water, and a book or two, to stay as long as we possibly can to stop Cairn Energy from beginning this dangerous and risky operation.
Right, that’s enough from us for now…time for tea!
In this video, McHardy gets a care package while aboard the pod.
A New Orleans native, McHardy graduated from Sterling in May 2010 with a degree in conservation ecology. At the age of 17, she founded the Seattle Rainforest Action Group to protect the region's endangered old-growth rainforest. Her work earned her the prestigious Brower Youth Award for young environmentalists from the California-based Earth Island Institute.

****Update - Thursday June 2****
McHardy and her the other Greenpeace protesters were taken into custody by the Danish Navy and their arctic survival pod was removed from undernearth the oil rig, where it had been suspended for four days.
Greenpeace posted this photo of a Danish Navy ship moving in on the pod, and this YouTube video about the incident.
On the video, the Greenpeace narrator says, "They're in jail but we'll continue to oppose the madness of drilling in this fragile and unique environment. Our campaign will go on until we get all companies out of the Arctic."
This reads like an Adam Sandler script.

The drilling isn't illegal. BUT I'm sure that what she is doing IS ILLEGAL. If she wants to stop this drilling she should take the time and effort to go through the Danish legal process instead of engaging in this attention-getting stunt. I hope she is arrested and rots in a Danish jail for a while.

Undernearth?

No, Tim. Clearly I meant undernearth. You know... as in the Shakira song "Undernearth Your Clothes"?

Get off my lawn Bromage! (shakes fist).
And BTW you should have titled this post "Environmentalist suspended without pay".

Yay. Now prosecute according to Danish law.
McHardy chose to engage in civil disobedience. Let's see if she has the guts to accept the consequences without complaining and calling for mommy and daddy and the U.S. government to bail her out.

This girl is a HERO!! She is standing up against GREED and trying to highlight the plethora of negative consequences associated with the worlds oil addiction. I hold a BS is chemistry and an MS in geochemistry, and I know all too familiar the PERMANENT degradation that off shore (and all drilling for that matter) inflicts on this planet every day!!
"Tresspass_is_illegal" you clearly lack any knowledge about the oil/gas industries of the world!! They OWN all of the world's governments, and one girl to "go through the Danish legal process" is like asking someone to kill godzilla with a bb-gun... She is doing something that has highlighted the continual raping of our planet in the name of capitalism, greed, and power.
I know the oil/gas industry as I have meet many through numerous chemical/geological conferences and listened to just as many technical talks and they all care about nothing more then their bottom line...I could be filthy rich too if I worked as a geologist for oil/gas, but I prefer to support the glimmer of hope for social and environmental prosperity and sustainability by working in the environmental sector, with the hope that one day I don't have to tell my kids, grandkids, etc. that they can no longer swim in the world's oceans, or eat the foods from the sea, or explore pristine marine areas.
Keep up your effort McHardy, I am also a young graduate (UVM), who works endlessly to educate the ignorant about the endless benefits of sustainable/renewable energy for all!!!

Amazing to see such reactions after the Gulf oil spill less than a year ago. Some memories are VERY short, it seems.

Mike,
"She is doing something that has highlighted the continual raping of our planet in the name of capitalism, greed, and power."
Yup, she is highlighting how to break the law to a few progressives in Burlington that read 7Days. Just a thought... I am betting most of the people that read this fall into two groups. Those that already hate "big oil" and didn't need her to highlight anything, and those that think she is a little too idealistic. I mean let's face it, this is 7 days not the CBS evening news.
Posted by: Jcarter | June 06, 2011 at 12:55 PM
JCARTER,
Thank you!! You have greatly helped to prove my point and solidify the fact that yes, it seems there are two types of people. Those that care about the future, and those that do not! Maybe she is a "little too idealistic", and maybe she has broken a law (wow, watch out for all those dangerous trespassers...looks like a terrorist to me, lol!), but her idealism is the focal point of her actions, which speak volumes...But maybe you are right, and we should just give up on ALL ideals and jump on the compliant, ignorant, "its good enough" band-wagon and just let "big-oil" continue their pillaging, and we should just teach our kids that mediocrity is okay, and when something gets too tough you should just give up! Sadly, you highlight, and represent, the downward spiral of so much of American society into an oblivious state of compliance, and that my friend is what, and will, destroy the very vibrancy that is SUPPOSED to be the USA!!
Also, there is a reason these things don't make the CBS, or any other major news branch.... wait for it.... that's right, they also are controlled by the multi-billion dollar oil/gas companies (or any other multi-billion dollar venture) of the world. We only heard/saw the Gulf oil spill because it was too close to land, and too big to hide from the public, but sadly these things happen literally EVERYDAY (of various scales)!!
Oddly, even though you have defined two groups, I believe you forgot the "stick my head in the sand and don't bother me" group that you appear to belong too... There are still a few bright and energetic minds in America which will fight for the future, while others profit from its destruction!!
Posted by: Mike | June 06, 2011 at 01:57 PM
"Those that care about the future, and those that do not!"
So if you think this was stupid, you don't care about the future? This ill-considered stunt didn't even have an end game, and now the kid who did it has thrown her research - which COULD have actually made some kind of a difference - in the toilet. They're not going to let her recreate her lab in prison.
It is a hallmark of Vermont "progressives" that standing in the street yelling is considered an accomplishment. Not surprising, given that anyone with left-leaning points of view who actually wanted to make a difference would have long ago moved somewhere that they're not preaching to the choir.

LOL.... LOL,
Mike, I admire your enthusiasm, I really do but it's clear that you don't even realize the hypocrisy that your post smacks of. The few bright energetic minds....lol, this girl? No way. If she was using her mind instead of her heart she would have done something productive and practical. Instead she wasted her time to doing something idealistic from the heart. As for the downward spiral of america...it isn't compliance my friend, it's misguided and misdirected actions. Jimmy has it right, standing in the street yelling is not an accomplishment. Protesting didn't work in the 60's and it isn't going to work now. Your parent's may have gave into you when you threw a fit, no one else gives a shit.
The downward spiral of America is directly correlated with the bleeding heart liberal indoctrination. Take the emotion out it, add clear well thought out logic and these stunts take on a new meaning of futility.
A wise man once said "Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any
man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."

HAHAHAHAH!! Thanks JIMMY and JCARTER... Now I have two who are proving my point... Awesome. Now I suspect a joke here, I mean "Jimmy" and "JCarter", you must be spoofing on our former president Jimmy Carter, or maybe you are the same person with two different screen names trying to make an argument for our enjoyment, I don't know. Also I went to undergrad at UVM, I'm NOT from VT, nor do I live there, although it is a great place. I'm from NH (live free or die) and until recently NH has been a conservative state, so again maybe you both should consider where your bandwagon is bringing you before you apply your automatic label...
Jimmy, if you think this girls actions equate to the repercussions of jail time then you are scarier than JCARTER in your mindset. Furthermore, because of your inability to see the forest from the trees you have completely missed what "her end game" was, which was to bring attention to a reality society is sheltered from and to spark the very conversation/debate that is evolving from our points... And as for her research going down the toilets you obviously have no experience in academia or research in the sciences, as people may get locked up but their minds will never be caged... she will continue with her ideas and likeminded people who CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE will scoop her up in a heart beat to further the understanding of that particular sector of the sciences. Have you ever got a scientific journal article published??
JCARTER, hypocrisy!!! HAHAHAHA, that's really cute man. Yes this girl has more brains and enegry in her pinky-finger then I bet you have amassed in your life time. And that's not my opinion, look at all her awards, recognitions, science accomplishments, and accredited degree... AND she is only 25!! What did you have accomplished in your life by that age? Lobby for the oil industry? And once again you prove my point, as you stated "no one gives a shit", thanks for the reiteration of my point! It’s clear you have no science background, but now I know you don't know history either... Environmentalism and the protecting of the world's natural resources came from both protesting in the streets and proof in the labs. Have you heard of Rachel Carson? Do you know what chemicals were being sprayed everywhere before protesting? Do you know what the oil industry used to get away with before the protests? Do you know anything about American Environmentalism and the loads of progress that has prompted social, economic, and environmental prosperity? I do, I do, I do.... sadly you do not! Please, call me on anything, I love making the ignorant look stupid, as that is actually sometimes what ends ignorance after self-reflection.
How much Fox News do both of you watch? It is the insecure, brain-washed, Fox news conservative base that has no brains, not the young, intelligent, and active citizens. But please keep the "liberal vs. conservative" out of this as it just waters down the content and point of all of this... oh wait, that was both of your tactics from the start. Who was that "wise man"? Sounds like a Nixon or Regan quote, who every knows were far from wise...

lol, stop it you are killing me.
Yup, I'm sure she beat the 99th percentile on her GRE's before she... oops wait, she likely hasn't even taken them with her "Accredited degree." Once either she or you get your Doctorate we can talk...and it's in a scientific field. Now what was that you said about ignorance ... " I love making the ignorant look stupid, as that is actually sometimes what ends ignorance". Now, run along and self reflect oh ignorant one. And BTW, thanks for validating my hypocrisy statement. LOL!!!
Man I wish I could use an emoticon, because I just can't describe how much you have me laughing. ROFLMAO Call you on anything BABHAHAHAHHAHAHH....AHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHA

Food for thought :
a.) Can on amass energy or brains?
b.) When did run on sentences become acceptable as long as you throw in a comma here and there
c.) Why do people think some laws should be followed but others can be ignored just because they want to make a statment?
d.) Why does the press repeated give credence to people for publicity stunts?
e.) Is Sterling College accredited?
F.) what is the appropriate age to get a degree in? Should I be impressed that a 25 year old got a 4 year degree roughly 8 years after they graduate high school?
g.) Who the hell is Rachel Carson....Johnny's wife?
8.) Why is it the person usually calling someone ignorant is usually the ignorant one
I.) What's the deal with Fox news? I watch channel 44 every night and I think it is rather well done. I particularly like Laura.
X.) Why are some people so anthropocentric? The earth has been here far longer the people, has overcome much more severe climate conditions, and still maintained homoestasis. Why is it going to come to and end RIGHT NOW?
XI.) What's wrong with the status quo? Why is there always a crisis?
12.) why is it that some new poster comes on every week or so and starts flapping at the gums calling people ignorant, stupid, racist, and acting like they know everything. Stop read a few posts, get a feel for the forum first, then post. It's called impulse control
XIII.) “To me, it's a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, Hey, can you give me a hand? You can say, Sorry, got these sacks. - Deep Thoughts

"if you think this girls actions equate to the repercussions of jail time then you are scarier than JCARTER in your mindset."
Not sure what you mean by this. She's in jail right now. She's not doing research right now. Whatever good her research may do, it has now been, at a minimum, significantly delayed. Certainly much more than the four days she delayed Cairn Energy.
"to bring attention to a reality society is sheltered from and to spark the very conversation/debate that is evolving from our points"
This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. You actually believe that any dialogue we have on a blog has some meaning. It doesn't. Nothing you or I say here will ever reach, let alone resonate with, anyone who has anything to do with the issues at hand.
Let's put this in perspective. The best that Hannah McHardy and Greenpeace can hope for is that Cairn publishes some kind of oil spill mitigation plan, which they either have or could bang out in two days. The worst case for them - other than the jail time - is that they could be found liable for around $2m/day that they inhibited drilling. I don't know how much money Greenpeace has lying around, but that doesn't sound like a great tradeoff to me.

I think if I attached a great big pod to Mike's house and just tried to squat there he would probably call the cops and hope I went to jail too. But, you know if it's saving the polar bears it's all good.

"I hold a BS is chemistry and an MS in geochemistry . . ."
"I know the oil/gas industry as I have meet many through numerous chemical/geological conferences . . ."
"I am also a young graduate (UVM), who works endlessly to educate the ignorant . . ."
I don't think you can be both a "young graduate" and also a holder of BS and MS degrees and someone who has attended "numerous chemical/geological conferences" and "knows" the oil/gas industry. I think you are making sh__ up.
You're also paranoid if you believe that the oil/gas industry "OWN all of the world's governments."
Further, your BS degree stands for bu__sh__ artist if you think that illegally occupying other people's property is the only or appropriate response to legal commercial activity you don't like. By the way, Denmark has a highly developed legal system and is one of the most civilized and forward-thinking countries in the world. It's not Russia or China. McHardy and her pals certainly can and should use the Danish legal system rather than being foreign terrorists.
Further, you've got a lot of nerve implying that everyone who doesn't already know what you allegedly know, or believe what you believe, is "ignorant" and must be "educated" by you. Get lost.

YES!! I knew I would see some good laughs on here again, as reading parts of these posts from these three individuals is simply hilarious! Although the continuing lack of ability to recognize the forest from the trees is frustrating... try to stay on topic
JCARTER, so now you drop that you hold a "Doctorate" and that it "is in a scientific field". Why wait until now to make such a claim, when the strength of someone's argument is enrooted in there education in a certain topic... sounds like you are only trying to trump my REAL degrees to try to validate your points. Regardless, what science field is it in? Where did you get a PhD? I would love to go tit-for-tat, but I’m sure you'll just google any question I throw at you anyways. As for your second post with all your "points", this is a BLOG, not a dissertation. The focus is not my punctuation, but way to water down the point of the entire debate, again! Additionally, your point "X", clearly demonstrates that I highly doubt you hold a degree in the sciences as it obviously shows that you don't understand the world's changing climates. You do realize that the world's increasing CO2 concentrations is a fact and not a theory. It is something that is easily quantified and has been increasing since the beginning of the industrial era. And yes, fact, CO2 is a green house gas... I'm hoping I don't need to connect the dots. Please tell me you are joking about Rachel Carson, pretty please? Lastly, calling someone ignorant is not a personal attack, but by definition a statement indicating that someone "lacks information, knowledge, or education" on a certain topic, which I believe you do. That's all. And its not someone’s house that the girl hung from, it’s a machine of exploration, exploitation, and production with then end goal of consumption. And “call the cops”, never in my lifetime…
Jimmy, at least you are trying to keep it on topic. Thanks! It means that this girl should not be in jail for her actions...sorry if the wording was confusing. Your second point saddens me to the core however, as I strongly disagree with you that two people having a conversation/debate has NO meaning. You are wrong, and every prominent individual throughout history disagrees with you, particularly the very founders of this great land. In fact, this compliancy which has been demanded by the powers that be in society IS what is completely dissolving the freedoms and expression of ideas that is SUPPOSED to make the USA such a great place. I hope you don't preach to people not to engage in such dialogue, with the pretence that it has no meaning. However, you still seem to miss the point, which is that the oil/gas industry does not have legitimate plans to mitigate a potential oil spill of this magnitude, despite what their management plans suggest. Have you already forgotten about what happened in the Gulf of Mexico?? Their plan talked about walrus’ and other organism that don’t even exist in the Gulf. Why you may ask, well because they just copy and paste pages, slap it into a document, pay Congress and other over sight groups off and go about their raping. This is a fact! Again, I know these businesses and the types of people who work for them (where the people are the types that don't question and will take money over morality). I’ve been to numerous AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologist) meetings as only one example, and there is some truly scary stuff that they talk about, again, all in the name of the bottom dollar! Why are the oil/gas companies not found liable for their continuous environmental degradation? There is an estimated 2000-3000 old oil wells RIGHT now in the Gulf of Mexico which ARE leaking. There are over 35,000 wells that have been drilled in the Gulf over the decades of extraction, and only an estimated 10% of them have every been re-checked once. And if anyone knows anything about this Earth, it is that the ocean is corrosive and an extremely powerful thing which will destroy any man-made steel-pipe or cement cover. Again, these are not my opinions, but statements of facts from anyone who is not on an oil/gas salary.
Tresspass_is-Illegal, I was wondering if you had anything intelligent to add… Well, I guess I can keep waiting for that, lol!! I don’t care what you think about my credentials, I worked really hard to get them, and I even graduated in the top spot for my program as both an undergrad and grad student, and was even awarded the prestige of the top MS graduate from my program. And yes, when you are a YOUNG, ENERGETIC, FREE-THINKING, INTELLIGENT person doing all of those things just comes naturally and the accomplishments are very satisfying. Ok, off the soap box, but you brought it up! I don’t mean literally OWN, as we all know China literally owns the USA. I mean they pay-off the people in government that they need to in order to commence oil production as quickly and as cheaply as possible, which means the environment (which of course includes people) gets destroyed. And its not paranoia, its called reality. Have you ever read any of the environmental impact statement for the Deep Horizon? I have read some of it, and as a scientist and consultant, it is a complete JOKE. Good one on the “BS” jab, did you get that out of a cracker jack box? Or did you come up with that all on your very own? HAHAHAHA!!! Furthermore, this is NOT an issue of legality!! This is an issue of money dictating policy, and while numerous other groups and people are “trying” other means of requiring oil/gas companies to prove that they can mitigate any disasters, while this happens the oil continues to spill and the environment continues to suffer. I guarantee that McHardy’s actions have already had an influence, and as other young, energetic people who want to make the world a better place, and aren’t stuck in a state of pathetic compliance, there will be change. There HAS to be CHANGE!!
Ok, no more. Love the few intelligent remarks… the rest has made for an ongoing comedic performance at my work!! I’m “Getting Lost”!! HAHAHAHAHA

"I hope you don't preach to people not to engage in such dialogue, with the pretence that it has no meaning."
I never said people shouldn't talk to each other. I said that the conversation we're having here will have no impact on the matter at hand. You have made no attempt to illustrate how it might do so.
The fact remains that Greenpeace will find out tomorrow whether they are just looking at jail time for one or more of its members, or a $2.8m per day fine on top of that.
It is also worth noting that Cairn did share their spill response plan with Greenland's government, who accepted it; and that the people of Greenland - you know, where the drilling is going to take place - by and large are pissed at Greenpeace.

Mike,
You didn't respond to a single point I made. Except possible X.
"X.) Why are some people so anthropocentric? The earth has been here far longer the people, has overcome much more severe climate conditions, and still maintained homoestasis. Why is it going to come to and end RIGHT NOW?"
"Additionally, your point "X", clearly demonstrates that I highly doubt you hold a degree in the sciences as it obviously shows that you don't understand the world's changing climates. You do realize that the world's increasing CO2 concentrations is a fact and not a theory"
Your response doesn't even address it but somehow that means I have no scientific background?
Well little Mikey, first I agree atmospheric CO2 levels are increasing, and as Bill Nye the science guy demonstrated decades ago it's a greenhouse gas. Interestingly, I did not speak of those in my post. What you are likely not aware of is that CO2 levels have been higher, temps have been hotter and .....the earth didn't end. The systems feedback is such to maintain homeostasis. It's that simple. If it didn't we would all be dead already. While my degrees are not in climatology, and I don't claim to be an expert on the field there are several notable possibilities. Warming leads to increase snow fall....that cools the earth. Higher CO2 leads to less transpiration, that leads to less water vapor in the air (the major greenhouse gas).
What your absolute black and white mumbo jumbo indicates is you really don't know much of anything either, and you are attempting to use a fake confidence and name-calling to cover it up.
Anywho, whether the gal latched onto a tanker or a house doesn't matter, they are both PRIVATE property. She tresspassed and that's that. Now she can face the consequences of her actions.
And the main point that I originally tried to make, that Jimmy has reiterated and to which you do not respond, is this. What she did, while possibly noble and idealistic, is ultimately useless and symbolic. She didn't reach an audience, she didn't stop anything, all she did was get herself busted. There are stunts, and then there are realistic solutions. This girl uses her heart too much and her brain to little.
