The Week Ahead: November 26-December 2

The Week AheadHere's what's happening in Vermont news and politics this week. Got an event you want in next week's calendar? Email us by Friday to submit.

Monday, November 26

  • Gov. Peter Shumlin will be in Burlington this afternoon. At 3 p.m., he'll deliver a box of diapers to Jason Fitzgerald, who has collected 20,000 diapers for homeless residents at COTS. At 4 p.m., he tours the Greater Burlington YMCA (and, presumably, pumps some iron). And at 5:30 p.m., he'll speak at a kick-off event for Vermont Disaster Relief Fund at EB Strong's Prime Steakhouse.
  • At 7 p.m., the Burlington City Council meets. On the agenda: a public hearing on a new residential occupancy ordinance that would limit how many people can live in one house near downtown. Also, the resolution by councilors Max Tracy, Rachel Siegel, Sharon Bushor and Vince Brennan to keep a redeveloped Moran Plant publicly owned.

Tuesday, November 27

  • At 11 a.m., Shumlin holds his weekly press conference in the 5th floor of the Pavilion Building.
  • At 5:30 p.m., the Vermont Chamber of Commerce honors Burlington developer Tony Pomerleau as its "citizen of the year" with a banquet at the Hilton. The 95-year-old real estate tycoon was the subject of an intimate (and super in-depth) profile by the Burlington Free Press' Candace Page on Sunday. Gov. Shumlin speaks at 6.
  • At 7 p.m., the craziest intersection Burlington is the subject at a public meeting. The discussion will air strategies for improving the corner of Colchester Avenue and North and South Prospect streets How to make it safer for bikes, pedestrians and, of course, cars? The Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission hosts the meeting in the McClure Conference Room at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
  • Also today, U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy will receive the 2012 annual Achievement Award from Vermont Law School's Washington DC Alumni Association in the U.S. Capitol Building. The award recognizes Leahy for "outstanding achievements" in environmental policy.

Wednesday, November 28

  • At 8 a.m., Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger holds "mornings with Miro" at the Bagel Cafe on North Avenue. At 11:30 a.m., hizzoner holds a press conference on sustainable energy (details TBA). And at 5:25 p.m., he hosts "The Burlington Mayor's Show" live on Channel 17 (CCTV). Stream it here.
  • At 11 a.m., Gov. Shumlin and University of Vermont president Thomas Sullivan hold a joint press conference in UVM's Aiken Center Solarium.
  • At 1 p.m., the gov will be at Paine's Christmas Trees in Morrisville to cut down the annual "holiday tree" for the Statehouse lawn. Of course, it's a hanukkah tree, but he can't say that.
  • At 4 p.m., UVM scholars will hold a panel discussion on what effect taxing sugar-sweetened beverages (an idea repeatedly floated in the state legislature) would have on Vermont consumers, small businesses and college students. In the Davis Center's Sugar Maple Ballroom.

Thursday, November 29

  • At 8 a.m., Mayor Miro is the guest on Charlie, Ernie and Lisa, on WVMT 620 AM.  At 11 a.m., Weinberger tours the Wharf Lane Apartments on Maple Street for an open house.
  • The Circ Highway is dead, but planning for an alternative goes on. At 6:30 p.m. in Williston Town Hall, the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission Metropolitan Planning Organization (colloquially known as CCRPCMPO) tackles alternative routes through Burlington's burbs.

Friday, November 30

  • Remember the community meeting to address the police shooting at the July 29 protest in Burlington? It's happening at 6:30 p.m. at North End Studios. What — the Friday midnight slot was already taken?

Saturday, December 1

Sunday, December 2

  • At 10 a.m., watch hundreds of runners in Santa suits at the annual RiRa's Santa 5K Run and Walk. The race is sold out, but the Guinness is always flowing.
