Organic Enforcement

I read this morning that a large dairy farm in California, Case Vander Eyk, lost its USDA organic certification. The 10,000 cow farm didn't meet organic standards -- big surprise.

Although the rules and regulations encode some aspects of "organic" farming, it's really hard, if not impossible, for a law to capture and enforce the spirit of what so many thoughtful farmers are striving for: sustainability, eco-friendliness, equitable wages, tasty products, etc.

Mother Jones reported on Case Vander Eyk and Horizon Dairy last year, check it out...
Finally, here's a copy of a complaint filed against Case Vandery Eyk by the Cornucopia Institute in 2005...

Took long enough for 'em to do something about it, eh?
