Boo-boo and discussion.
OK. I was bound to screw this up one of these days...
The spotlight in the paper for RECON at the FlynnSpace is incorrectly listed as Saturday, April 15.
It's actually on Friday.
This is the first time I've ever messed that kind of thing up, so go easy! I guess I've been distracted; moving into a new apartment, and hustling deadlines like a madman. I know, excuses, excuses.
Anyway, apologies to Tom Lawson.
Speaking of Tom...
There's been a lot of talk about the (temporary) reformation of the Pants. The original lineup of Tad Cautious, Tommy Law, Pistol Stamen and Hutch is hard to beat.
But does anyone remember the later incarntation with Paul whashisface on drums, Dan Mazur on keyboards and Jeff Lawson on bass?
I seem to recall them experimenting with some heavy sludge-rock ala Melvins at that point.
Drop-tuned guitars were all the rage back then. The Pants were not exempt.
In the quest for the ultimate, bowel-rupturing tones, my old band tuned down to B. That's frickin' low, guy.
I liked some of those Pants tunes, though. Didn't they record a little demo with Trey that featured some of that material?
Anyway, I'd like to hear it again.
Let me know if I'm remembering things correctly.
Aw, now you're just baiting me. Go on.
Paul, uh... I'm forgetting his last name now, but he was in Nap with Nick Rubin and a fellow Tarheel. He took to streaking across the stage at Pants Mk I shows, or rather, streaking really slowly... more of a leisurely stroll. Went on to be the drummer in Pants Mk II. That's how you do it. I don't know if anyone's in touch with him, but Mazur will surely be joining in on the reunionizing.
The Pants Mk I used to cover Melvins' "Hooch", and things started sounding increasingly Melvins-y then. I think The Pants Mk II probably continued that trend. I kinda lost touch. All The Wiser was a Melvinsesque number and we did it on that Trey/Bearsville demo, along with High Water Mark (from Fred Sex), and one other number I forget now.
I just spent a couple hours talking to local media godfather Bill Simmon for a Pants documentary he's working on, which was really cool and weird to try and remember the order of events.

Aww, baiting is sooooo fun!
The Pants get a goddamn documentary! Simmon is shooting me on Saturday.
But hopefully not in the face, so my Mom can have an open casket funeral.

Wha?

So Neil didn't remember the Fred Sextet when I interviewed him. Does anyone out there? Mazur was part of it. It was the four original Pants members doing low-key acoustic, mopey tunes with Mazur on keys and one other person. I saw this line up a few times, once at a chapel at UVM, maybe the Last Elm, maybe Metronome. I also remember a low key set at Muddy's featuring the Chainsaws tune "Down on the Highway" or whatever it was called.
And what ever happened to Joey Bag O' Donuts?

Bill, I'm sure you've realized this already, but the Pants documentary HAS to have a good portion about the Chainsaws, for context..
Be kind to Casey's face, too. To paraphrase Jack Handey, Casey's face can say a lot, especially the mouth part.

Paul's (the MKII drummer)last name was/is Currier. I also remember James Harvey being an auxillary member at some point, playing keyboards, methinks. Mind blowing versions of "Matt Thorsten's Experiences In France" around that time. Ahhh rememberies.

Hey Casey and others;
To refresh one's memory about all the great Pants gigs of yore, one need only drop by the Big Heavy listening library as I have donated some 500 hours of live recordings of local bands from the mid-90s to their library upon my departure for Houston. Among them are probably about 20 Pants gigs, both Mach I and II, including the acoustic set at Muddys and a couple of gigs with the Reverend James Harvey. It's killer, classic stuff. I only wish I could be there with y'all for the reunion gigs!!! Hope everyone's keeping warm in yankee-land!

I'll have to check those out.
Pete! How's fatherhood?
Oh, did I somehow get dropped from the STN list? I haven't gotten an e-mail in awhile.
Or maybe I'm just blacklisted. ;)
