Wanna buy Syd Barrett's house? It's up for sale.
Howdy. How was everyone's long weekend? Mine was regular sized — we're in production on Mondays. Not complaining, though. It was fairly stress free.
Let's talk about what pops up in my iPod!
I randomly heard two Tim Buckley tunes today, both from his far-out 1970 album Starsailor. That man sure could caterwaul. Can't post 'em, though; the files are locked.
Say, have any of you PC users ever experienced difficulty streaming or downloading the songs I put up? They're typically in MP4 format, which may lead to incompatibilities. Post a comment, and let me know; I can always convert. But not to Christianity. They won't have me.
Speaking of Buckleys, have you ever wondered what Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates fame) and Robert Fripp might sound like together? A bit like late-period Jeff, only a whole lot cheesier. The song in question appears on Fripp's 1979 solo jaunt, Exposure. He'd rip it off two years later with "Matte Kudesai," from King Crimson's Discipline. Anyway, check it out if you've got any kind of tolerance for melodramatic falsetto:
And finally, a groovy new number from Akron/Family's upcoming disc, Meek Warrior. I sometimes like this band, especially the more percussive stuff. Enjoy yourselves a nice, krautrock-psych-trance-free-jazz-jam:
"Cuz I can ford a red eed only street a wide a ree land."
I just got off the phone with the legendary Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins. We were supposed to chat at 1 p.m., but he was "at band practice." Rad! At least I got to hear his outgoing message, which is the theme song to "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." Now that's punk-rock.
It was a rapid-fire conversation — he's really quite the cutup.
Here's a tidbit: Buzz claims to be responsible for Kurt Cobain's demise. Kurt used to follow the Melvins around like a little puppy; by giving him a window into the rock-roll lifestyle, Buzz started a chain reaction that ended with a solitary shotgun blast.
He totally remembered the show they played in Burlington just days after Cobain's death. "Yeah, that was with The Obsessed," he said. Heavy.
I was recently sent the Melvins' upcoming disc, Senile Animal. It's good, but a couple of tunes seem to rip off Houdini and Stoner Witch. Probably bound to happen after 25 years of rock.
Try this one on for size:
Mia Matsumiya of Kayo Dot.
In this week's column, I mentioned putting up a couple of tracks by Kayo Dot and Christina Carter. Unfortunately, the stuff won't upload.
Perhaps KD are just too epic for the internets. Well, you're gonna have to trust me when I say they're awesome. Witness their wizardry tonight at 242 Main.
Carter performs at the Green Door Studios on Sunday. It'll no doubt be an interesting performance.
In other news, I've been busy making music. Really good music, actually. I'm beyond psyched, and anyone who knows me can tell you how rare that is. In addition to working on my new project, this weekend I have to master a record by a freaky talent straight outta Indiana.
Today at 1 p.m. I talk to Mr. Melvins. Had a chance to do a Flaming Lips phoner, but the turnaround time was too tight. And, since Wayne Coyne no doubt reads this blog, we'd likely have gotten into a fight. Or maybe he'd have suckered me into his cutesy-robot cult.
I'm still gonna go to the show.
