Friday flavors.
No, I don't have *extra* tickets to GWAR. You'll just have to watch the Live From Antarctica DVD and make your own sticky fluids.
In even sadder news, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun has died. He signed everyone, from Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles to Led Zeppelin. An aside: Recording geeks should check out Tom Dowd & the Language of Music, which gives an excellent look at those pioneering early days at Atlantic.
Let's cheer ourselves back up with this video of wee Argentinian kids playing classic metal. Watch the whole damn thing. Thanks, MGP.
In other news, Daniel Pinchbeck — the psychedelic ranger from a couple of posts ago — was on the Colbert Report last night. A previous guest was Peter Singer, the so-called "radical" ethicist and animal rights champion. Whatta week.
Ertegun also had a big impact on soccer by being one of the founding owners of the Cosmos. You can make a strong argument that without the Cosmos, there wouldn't have been an explosion of youth soccer in the 70's & 80's. And without that grassroots growth of the sport in the US, the World Cup would not have been held in the US in 94 and we wouldn't have a pro league and competitive national team today. It all goes back to Ertegun and his brother believing they could sell soccer in America when nobody else even thought about soccer.
It's rare that someone can have such a large impact on two distinct aspects of life.

WHAT? No Gwar tickets? What the eff? Now I'm just gonna have to get my friend drunk and make him vomit on me while wearing a rubber mask.
That's a lot for a friday. I'm old, remember.

Check out the interview the guys from Gwar did on the air after my show yesterday http://www.uvm.edu/~wruv/?action=archives it is in the Mind over Metal show yesterday. I think you have to listen to me talking confusedly because I didn't know how long it was going to be before they showed up and one song before they come in. I was thinking this morning that they should have named their Christ/hitler hybrid Christler, but that's just me
