Black Magic Dance
So, I keep writing about all these vids and MP3s that you kind folks keep sending my way, and then I go and disappear from the blogosphere for a week. Oops! Sorry ’bout that. You'll see why on Wednesday, but it's been a rather hectic week here at your friendly neighborhood alt-weekly. Whatever. No excuses.
Anyway, I'm gonna unload everything I've got on you this week, beginning with this crazy ass music video entitled "Black Magic Dance." It comes to us from the star of last week's SoundBites column, the one, the only, CrowfeatheR. It's really, um … jeez, I honestly don't know what to say about this one, so I'm just gonna throw it out there and open the floor for discussion. Enjoy.

Well since Dan can't wrap his Alt country brain around this work completely, let me explain what you'll see and hear. The song itself was inspired by flip flops... That being some UVM chicks at RJ's one night trying to dance to a Dance Hall beat. They just shuffled in their dirty flip flops, It was sad, not at all like the Puerto Rican girls in Boston who dance to that beat like they could literally break the stick shift right off your transmission. They drop to a squat, and violently slam their hips back and forth like they are trying to pound down a railroad tie. I decided it was my job to teach the dance illiterate babes, and pasty white UVM girls how to do it right, make them "grind your lips, get low and slam those hips". I wrote the song from the beat up using a huge taiko drum as the foundation. Since it is a Dance Hall Reggae song, I needed a serious dance hall performer which brought me to the incredible Andrew T who co-wrote the lyrics with me and also stars in the video. As the song is basically a dance lesson on how to dance sexy, it is without a story which meant no story board for he video. This made it hard to edit and be compelling as what you basically have is a very, very, very, fancy slide show. The basics of the song are dance, lyrics and some crazy ass guitar shredding, so the video follows suit and follows the same theme. For the look of the dancer what I was going for was a 1990's "club kid" look to contrast with my own Gothic-Biker-Pirate visage. For the general look of the video I wanted a psychedelic disco feel. I hope you find it compelling and interesting if you don't like Dance Hall or Metal Guitar or pretty girls shaking their ass in a blatant, violently sexual manner. The single is currently spinning worldwide on clear channel & entercom stations and here locally on Champ 101.3 by request. Bon apetite!

No Dan was pretty spot on with his review of this video. It honestly seems like a poorly executed joke. It makes no sense, and the song itself is a joke. Combining (uninspired) shred with a (weak) dance hall beat just doesn't work. This song is nigh unlistenable. Shred and reggae have nothing in common, its like combining death metal and polka.
