Jericho-Underhill Open Studio Tour [81]

Openstudiodianne

5/25/08: Farm machinery sculptures, water-inspired jewelry, layered swaths of recycled fiber and marbled paper bowls - and that is just a sampling of the art you can find along one remote dirt road in Jericho.

During Vermont Open Studio Weekend, artists across the state open their doors to the public.

The Jericho-Underhill Open Studio Tour is a group of artists who have fostered a fertile rural community.

I began the day at HQ, the Emile A. Gruppe Gallery where I met some photographers, and got a map and directions.  Then I visited artists along Nashville Rd.

Peeking inside artists' studios is a real thrill, especially when they live in such funky, unique homes.  Nature and art intermingle in a symbiotic setting.  There must be something in the water.

The Clothes Exchange [80]

Clothes_exhange_2008_5_sweetladyjan 5/15/08: Shop till you drop, recycle used clothing, socialize over cocktails AND raise money for a women's charity?

Sounds too good to be true, right?  Actually, it's the 7th Annual Clothes Exchange.

In 2008, The Clothes Exchange was attended by over 450 women and together with local sponsors, they raised $30,000 for The Hicks Foundation.  Not bad for an event that began 7 years ago in the living room of event organizer, Leslie Halperin.

Allison Hicks, the founder of the organization was on hand to educate women about the dangers of cervical cancer which, if screened for with yearly Pap smears, is 100% preventable.

Phinn Sonin [79]

Junk4

5/12/08: What makes Burlington so special?  Meet Phinneus Sonin, Junk Connoisseur, Cabaret MC, proud dad, radio DJ, naked bike rider, and juggler - now do you get it?

Phinn has been dumpster diving for years which lead to the creation of Junktiques Collective, a living room/store where you can spend a couple of dollars and find some oddity or other that you didn't realize you needed: bottle caps, remote controls, irons, doodads, tools, books, records, etc.

Sheriff Phinn, you have my vote.

Inner Fire District [78]

Innerfire1The Inner Fire District (MySpace) are hard to define.  When pressed they call themselves Radical Yiddish Balkan Culture Folk but their sound sidesteps labels.

Thursday night they celebrated May Day at the North End Studio in Burlington with two accordions, an upright bass, guitar, and a clarinet, tragically beautiful 100 year old songs and klezmer music that had the crowd stomping its feet.

Call 911, the Inner Fire District will entertain you while your house burns down.
