Slam for Sudan [170]

3/25/10: High school varsity basketball players from all over the state of VT competed Thursday in the 2nd Annual Slam for Sudan.

About $2000 was raised for the local non-profit Global Reach Partnerships which helps Sudanese refugees with a variety of life skills.

Slam for Sudan began as a class project at Champlain College and two years later is bringing together the local Sudanese community with slam dunking VT All-Stars.

Music: "Slam for Sudan," Jarred "All Star" Haynes

Pa Pa Doodles' Chickens [169]

3/20/10: They call Deb Rosewolf the "Bird Lady" and with a flock of about 275 egg-laying girls populating her farm, there is little wonder why.

Pa Pa Doodles Farm in Albany VT is looked after by Pa Pa Doodles the dog. When they aren't roaming freely and searching for food, the girls live in the "Waldorf for chickens" and Deb sells their large eggs through the Pete's Greens CSA.

Wake Robin Sugar Shack [168]

3/10/10: Residents at Wake Robin, a retirement community in Shelburne, have been maintaining a Sugar Shack in the woods since 1998 when resident Ed Wheeler organized CVU students to help build the structure.

65 and older residents tap over 100 trees for sap, boil it down and strain about 26 gallons each season.

Eva gets a lesson in syrup making and has a shot (or two) of their sweet nectar.

Tiny Houses, The Sequel [167]

3/6/10: We revisit Peter King, also known as "The Tiny House Guy" thanks to a Stuck in VT video that went viral last winter.  Peter has built 11 tiny houses since we saw him last but is not super pleased with his new moniker.

We also meet Dale Helms who is downsizing with his wife from their 2,400 square foot home to a 1,200 square foot home.  While they build the smaller house, they will live in a 400 sq ft home that Peter helped them build.  With the help of this tiny house, they hope to eliminate their debt.

With the economy in shambles and foreclosures running rampant, tiny houses seem more relevant than ever.  But Peter has some ideas that are even bigger than his tiny houses.

Plowin' with the DPW [166]

2/24/10: 2/24/10: Winter after winter, the Department of Public Work's Street Department keeps Burlington's roadways and sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

Eva hitches a ride with snowplow operator Lorand Codrean and they take a spin around the city.
