Matsuri '11, A Japanese Festival [217]

3/27/11: Over 1,500 people attended Matsuri '11, A Japanese Festival at St Michael's College in Colchester Vermont.

This is a biennial event cosponsored by The Japan-America Society of Vermont (J-ASV) and Saint Michael's College. Attendees enjoyed varied performances of traditional Japanese music and dance as well as modern pop music, taiko drumming, aikido, and calligraphy.

This year the American Red Cross was also in attendance accepting donations for the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. They raised over $2600 with some help from local designer Sachie Kohlman (AKA Sachie Tani) who created a "Hope for Japan" sticker to raise money for her homeland.

Green Mountain 48-Hour Film Slam [216]

3/19/11: "Action!" The Green Mountain 48-Hour Film Slam took over the streets of Montpelier this weekend. 8 teams spent a sleepless weekend racing the clock to complete films for a sold-out Sunday screening at the 14th Annual Green Mountain Film Festival.

Prizes were awarded Sunday but you can see the films again March 27 at 4:00 pm at the Pavilion Auditorium in Montpelier.

Vermont Rails Model Railroad Show [215]

3/12/11: Vermont Rails Model Railroad Show brought hundreds of people to the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction last Saturday. Model train enthusiasts, young and old, gathered to buy parts, see friends and gawk at the railroads on display.

2/26/11: Amateur radio buffs come together for a morning of networking, flea market shopping and demos at Ham-Con: The Vermont Ham Radio Convention.

Tune in to learn more about this early form of communication which predates cells phones and the internet.
