CSWD Creative Reuse Showcase [257]

2/11/12: Trash becomes art at this popular annual show. Eva travels to Adams Farm Market in Williston to see the 16th Annual CSWD Creative Reuse Showcase.

High schoolers from Chittenden county recycle trash into works of art and compete for prizes and inclusion in the month-long March exhibit at Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Gallery in Burlington.

Back in January, Eva saw some works in progress at an Essex High School art class as students worked on their contest entries.

2/4/12: Duane Merrill and his son Ethan are antique dealers who have a deep appreciation for all things old. Last Saturday, Eva headed to Merrill's Auction Gallery in Williston to see them in action.

The Young Street Rink [255]

1/29/12: The Young Street Rink in Colchester is a backyard ice rink that has been maintained by the Young Street community for about a decade. Over the years this patch of ice has become the neighborhood hot spot.  Eva visits on a Sunday night for a bonfire, burgers and a tour.

NEK Snowmobile Drag Racing [254]

1/21/12: Eva heads to an icy corn field in Lyndonville for NEK Snowmobile Drag Racing. The event is hosted by Lyndon Sno Cruisers, a non-profit organization who use the money they raise to groom their trails. There will be 3 more races in February.

Jay Peak's Pump House [249]

12/12/11: Monday afternoon, hundreds of Vermont school kids celebrated the grand opening of the Pump House, Jay Peak's indoor water park. Eva found her inner kid - floating along the river that encircles the park, hurtling down La Chute and slipping down the blue and green tubes over and over again.

Tropical Storm Irene Hits Vermont [237]

8/29/11: One day after Tropical Storm Irene left flooding and devastation in many Southern Vermont towns, Burlington and Winooski residents flocked to the Winooski Falls to see the raging river for themselves.  Eva was one of them.

Heart of the Islands Bike Tour [231]

7/9/11: Last Saturday, over 200 people participated in the Heart of the Islands Bike Tour which was organized by Vermont Farm Tours and benefited Local Motion.

Riders met at the Snow Farm Vineyard in South Hero and chose between 3 routes, ambling through country lanes with killer views and stopping along the way for art, farms, and local food.

Pond Hill Pro Rodeo [230]

7/2/11: Cowboys and cowgirls competed in the Pond Hill Pro Rodeo Saturday night in Castleton. The Pond Hill Ranch is owned and operated by the O'Rourke family who have been producing rodeos for 45 years.

4th of July weekend is known as Cowboy Christmas and many cowboys travel from rodeo to rodeo competing for cash prizes.

New Americans Graduate from BHS [228]


‎6/17/11: Over 200 students graduated from Burlington High School Friday morning. For more than 60 of those graduates, English is not their native language. Yessi Gar-Elnabi held a graduation party at King Street Center earlier in the week to celebrate this accomplishment with some of his fellow seniors, teachers and principal.

6/4/11: The 4th Annual Vermont Hickory Open was held at the Copley Country Club in Morrisville last weekend.

Well-dressed attendees took a trip back in time using hickory shafted clubs from the early 1900s, enjoying golf the way it was originally played on historic courses like Copley.

Heavyfest 2011 [224]

5/21/11: Big Heavy World teamed up with Magic Hat Brewing Company and Performing Arts Center to present Heavyfest, the first outdoor concert of the season.

The rain held off, the sun shone brightly and Judgment Day came and went. Meanwhile, hundreds of revelers enjoyed plentiful Magic Hat beer, BBQ and local music courtesy of Heloise & The Savoir Faire, Rustic Overtones, Waylon Speed, Casio Bastard, Pariah Beat, Japhy Ryder and Jah Red.

Heavyfest 2011 raised over $5000 for Big Heavy World, a local non-profit, volunteer-run organization who archive and promote Vermont music and  operate The Radiator Burlington's community radio station (105.9 on your radio dial).

The Flynn's Munchkins [218]

3/30/11: Twelve Flynn Center for the Performing Arts' students followed the yellow brick road Wednesday night while playing munchkins and winkies to a full house in the Broadway National Tour of "The Wizard of Oz."

The young performers were chosen after a rigorous audition and rehearsed for 2 months for their once in a lifetime adventure in Munchkin Land.

Matsuri '11, A Japanese Festival [217]

3/27/11: Over 1,500 people attended Matsuri '11, A Japanese Festival at St Michael's College in Colchester Vermont.

This is a biennial event cosponsored by The Japan-America Society of Vermont (J-ASV) and Saint Michael's College. Attendees enjoyed varied performances of traditional Japanese music and dance as well as modern pop music, taiko drumming, aikido, and calligraphy.

This year the American Red Cross was also in attendance accepting donations for the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. They raised over $2600 with some help from local designer Sachie Kohlman (AKA Sachie Tani) who created a "Hope for Japan" sticker to raise money for her homeland.

Farm & Wilderness' Annual Ice Harvest [213]

2/19/11: Farm & Wilderness was founded in 1939 and promotes hard work, Quaker values and a connection to nature. For more than 40 years, it has welcomed campers and their parents for an Annual Ice Cutting Weekend.

After hiking 1.5 miles through deep snow, visitors use a human-powered pulley system to haul large blocks of ice up a hill. The goal is to fully stock the ice house at Flying Cloud, an off-the-grid summer camp teaching boys the joys of simple living.

2/11/11: CarShare Vermont held their annual Share the Love benefit bash Friday night at Main Street Landing's Union Station in Burlington. Eva talked to members about the concept of car sharing and went out for a drive with Nora (the car) and Patrick (a member) to see the sharing in action.
