Peace & Justice Center's 30th [114]

1/30/09: The Peace & Justice Center celebrated their 30 year anniversary last Friday with thirty cakes paraded down Church St and a cake-eating party in the evening.

Mayor Bob Kiss declared January 30th Peace & Justice Center Day in Burlington. Eva talked to long time supporters of the PJC about why their mission is important to Vermont.

The ONE Fashion Event [113]

1/24/09: The third annual ONE Fashion Event sold out Higher Ground Saturday. Local boutiques, designers and model-wannabes shook their stuff at the fundraising event for the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington.

Even the Obamas made an appearance wearing self-referential Flashbag designs.  For the grand finale, members of the Boys & Girls Club walked the runway and showed off designs of their own creation.

1/20/09: Euphoric Vermonters flocked to Nectar's Tuesday morning to attend Obama-rama, an Inauguration Bash hosted by Democracy for America and Vermont Daily Briefing.

The 200+ rowdy crowd responded to President Barack's inauguration with spontaneous applause, the occasional boo (for guess who), Bloody Marys and mass consumption of gravy fries.

We spoke to some of the revelers about their current mood, what the day meant to them and their hopes for the future.

Champlain Islands Winter Farmers Market [111]

1/3/09: Farmers markets are not just for summer anymore.  Winter markets are sprouting up all over Vermont this year. 

Champlain Islands Farmers Market is a group of farmers, gardeners, crafters, artisans and bakers who have been selling their goods together for 4 years.  This is their first season of winter markets and you might be surprised by their wide selection of tasty and colorful offerings. 

Sophie3It's definitely worth a trip out to the islands for Sophie's fresh buttermilk donuts, Sylvie's homemade soap and Jennifer's delectable sandwiches.

Dog Sledding [110]

Dogsled4 exxon 12/20/08: Ken Haggett and his 18 Peace Pups are a home-grown dog sledding team in Lake Elmore.  For years now they have been pulling dog-lovers through the wintry wonderlands of Vermont.

Exxon is the alpha dog (left), Dubois is the lead dog who almost died as a pup, and Muddy is a little jumpy.  Each Siberian Husky is a complete individual with unique markings, a distinct bark and an urge to RUN.

Stunt Nite [106]

Stunt711/24/08: Rice Memorial High School's annual talent competition Stunt Nite has been pitting classes against one another since 1929.

Almost all of the 400+ private school students sing, dance, act and perform and the winners become legendary.

The Vermont Independence Convention, sponsored by The Second Vermont Republic, was held at the VT Statehouse in Montpelier on Friday.

Attendees discussed the possibility of VT seceding from the USA and forming its own republic.

The 2nd Annual Quidditch World Cup was held on the Middlebury College campus this weekend.  Teams came from across the country (and even from Canada) to compete for the prestigious title.

Whether you come to it for your Harry Potter fix or treat it as a legitimate sport, quidditch is a jolly good time for all.

First year UVM students arrive one week early to participate in leadership, community and wilderness TREKs lead by UVM upperclassmen. 

Trekkies are kept busy exploring Vermont, enriching their new community and making friends for life.  There is little time left over for homesickness as students embark on their new adventures.

Intervale Center's Healthy City [90]

When did kale become so cool?  Down at Burlington's Intervale Center, the Healthy City kids are growing vegetables, becoming farmers, volunteering in their community,  working a summer job and changing the world, weed by weed.

Warren 4th of July Parade [87]

Warren_2_bush7/4/08: Thousands of people stormed the small town of Warren Friday for their 60th Annual 4th of July Parade.

Everyone was there, a camera-wielding Bush, candidates for governor, a Bummer of a Hummer, gigantic puppets, tractors and characters a plenty.

Rural Vermont is not as quiet as you may think.  Boiling in the backwoods are activists fighting for political change, energy independence and the POWER of green.

Phantom Theater [85]

Phantom5 6/21/08: For the past 15 years Phantom Theater (Facebook) has been producing original, fearless material in the Edgecomb Barn.

All-Purpose Dance Company performed original modern dance pieces to kick off the Phantom summer season.   There are two months of performances remaining, you can check out their schedule here.

There was no thunderstorm but a barn cat did make a brief appearance.  Also in attendance, a multitude of moths and bats.
